Job Description

The Family Nurse Partnership programme (FNP) is a preventative evidence based programme for young first time mothers and has been operational in Lanarkshire since July 2013.

The Scottish Government has made a commitment to offer Family Nurse Partnership to all eligible, first time mothers aged 19 and under across Scotland. NHSL now have 4 Family Nurse Teams and have fully expanded as per the SG guidelines.

FNP Nurses are required to have a nursing or midwifery qualification and registered with the NMC. All applicants should have at least 2 years post registration experience in community nursing. Ideal applicants will have experience working and engaging with hard to reach groups and issues relating to child and adult protection. The Family Nurse should have evidence of recognised nursing leadership skills and a willingness to work both innovatively and flexibly.

The Family Nurse will work with a maximum of 25 clients through pregnancy, infancy and into toddlerhood until the child is 2 years of age, working to the FNP model.
Applicants, most importantly are required to have a passion for working with children and young people using a strength based approach within the FNP philosophy.
Interviews for the 2 Family Nurse Posts have still to be arranged. Candidates are also required to be interviewed by FNP clients this has also still to be arranged.
Please note: Successful applicants are required to attend mandatory residential training events across Scotland.

Job Purpose:

The postholder is responsible for delivering the Family Nurse Partnership licensed programme (FNP) intensive home visiting programme to (max 25) vulnerable first time teenage women who are expecting their first baby. The postholder is required to be the lead in developing therapeutic relationships with clients and work intensively within complex family situations from early pregnancy until the child reaches 2 years when the programme is completed, whilst also ensuring fidelity to the programme’s licensing requirements. As part of the licensing requirements The FNP Team is also supported by a Consultant Psychologist and Data Manager/Administrator.

Knowledge, Training and / or Experience required:

  • First level registered nurse or midwife with current NMC registration. Professional knowledge acquired at diploma/degree level underpinning further specialist education and training such as Public Health Nursing/Health Visiting.
  • Masters degree relevant to the role such as Nursing and Health Studies, Psychology or demonstration of a range of skills commensurate with masters level. These could include Practice Educator role, specialist role in supporting looked after children and parenting support roles.
  • Successfully complete the mandatory FNP core education and training programme, delivered to Masters level.
  • Experience of managing a staff team, including staff supervision and appraisal skills at middle management level.
  • Knowledge of national (Scottish Government) policies affecting wellbeing of children and Families including Early Years.
  • Understanding and interpretation of legislation in place to protect children.
  • Working with families where there have been child protection requirements.
  • Experience of budget management.
  • Experience of interagency working.
  • Knowledge of understanding policy and guideline implementation, review and monitoring.
  • Experience of working with families in deprived communities.
  • Experience of compiling monitoring and evaluation reports for internal and external purposes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good IT skills and ability to use a range of software.
  • Ability to interpret FNP data and reports that reflect the programme delivery and fidelity requirements.
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Leased car is an option
