The role
The Weather Forecasting department within the Monitoring and Forecasting Service Line is responsible for providing reliable weather forecast services to our clients to enable efficient planning and informed decision making across multiple industry sectors including renewables, media, construction and oil and gas.
The department is now seeking a Senior Marine Weather Forecaster to be based in our Wallingford, Oxfordshire office to report to the Departmental Operations Manager. This is an exciting opportunity as you will not only get to work in a client facing role where you are the first point of contact for our clients, but you will also be actively encouraged to take part in innovation, offering you significant influence over research and development activities. The department operates a 24 hour / 7 day a week service, so this role will require you to work shift patterns across both day time and night time shifts. Whilst we cannot guarantee particular hours, we do try to accommodate individual preferences as much as possible. The role is based in Wallingford, but you will be providing forecasts for multiple regions across the globe. There may be the opportunity to work offshore, subject to additional training, should you like to.

You will enjoy interpreting a variety of forecasting models and communicating the output to people to enable them to safely plan and undertake activities. You will also be leading and developing forecasters less experienced than you, building their skillset and letting them learn from you. Whilst you are happy to work independently, teamwork is at the core of every shift to ensure work is completed to a high standard and on time. We also encourage development outside of forecasting so if you enjoy working with forecasting/climate datasets and making plots/graphs/images then we want to hear from you.
Who you’ll be working with:
You will work primarily with the other forecasters on the shift, acting as lead forecaster on shift to complete the workload. You will also deal directly with clients worldwide via email and/or over the phone, building strong working relationships with them over time. We also collaborate regularly with other departments in Fugro so, depending on what projects you are working on you will gain exposure to other parts of the company.
Here’s what a typical day would be like:
- Preparation of land-based forecasts (Weather Consultancy Services) primarily in the UK and in North West Europe;
- Preparation of marine weather forecasts for offshore operations around the world.
- Maintain meteorological watch over all locations / areas for which forecasts are being produced. Check all forecasts and initiate contact with Clients as necessary in case of severe weather threat;
- Working with less experienced members of staff, training forecasters in the day to day role and supervising their output. This is done daily as well as with more formal discussion seminars few times a year.
- Assisting the Forecast/Operations Manager in technical desk studies and/or commercial proposals;
- Development tasks and continuing personal study such as scripting, product development, writing blog articles etc.
Who we’re looking for:
Essential
- A science based degree in Meteorology / Climatology or Oceanography alternatively a MSc in Meteorology or suitable post graduate training, dependent upon the first degree subject;
- A minimum of 5 years working as a leading Marine Forecaster. Offshore/Dedicated Forecaster experience is desirable.
- Ability to work to schedules with demonstrable experience forecasting a variety of weather situations and clients around the world;
- Good problem-solving abilities leading others and making sound decisions under time pressure;
- Ability to work within a team and lead it, acting as subject matter expert for less experienced members of staff;
- Excellent communication skills - written and verbal;
- Self-motivated.
Desirable
- Formal forecaster qualification and/or professional accreditation.
- Offshore qualified or has been (BOSIET/FOET and offshore medical)
- Basic scripting skills (e.g. Python);
- Line mangement experience.
