Volunteers are central to Macmillan’s ambition to reach and improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer. We have one of the largest and most successful fundraising teams in the charity sector, but with the challenge of supporting four million people living with cancer by 2030, it’s essential we raise more to expand our vital work. As part of our UK-Wide team of Volunteer Fundraising Managers (VFMs) you will be implementing our ambitious plans to increase income and help reach 100,000 people living with cancer.
We are striving to do everything we can to ensure that our workforce is representative of the people we support, and those who support us. We advocate for being an inclusive organisation, where everyone can feel that they belong and where there are no barriers to success.
We want every individual to feel empowered to bring their best to work, and that’s why we offer flexibility in our working locations, working hours and benefits so we can support you in your life and your career, and we welcome a conversation about how these options can best support you.
We offer a range of flexible working patterns, such as compressed hours, e.g. 34.5 hours in 4 days instead of 5, flexibility to work earlier or later around our core working hours of 10am-4pm and more options.
In this role you will be responsible for recruiting, managing and developing a large and diverse team of volunteers in a range of roles across Scotland and Northern Ireland. These volunteers will support our growing and varied fundraising events programme, from marathons to music festivals, kiltwalks to bucket collections. As a result, you will be expected to travel to and attend up to 8 events each year, which typically take place over weekends and may involve overnight stays. Because of this travel, candidates must be able to travel easily across the region, which would normally mean being based in Scotland (where the majority of events takes place), and having access to a car (a car allowance is provided).
You'll also be working closely with our Corporate Volunteering colleagues to develop more volunteering activity with local businesses, and may be required to support a network of collectors and representatives. We're a close-knit team, and everybody supports each other where the need is greatest, so from time to time you may be asked to support colleagues on activity taking place outside of your region (although this will usually be done remotely from home). We also try to meet in person quarterly, which again may involve travel and overnight stays, although we will be flexible if this causes caring issues.
For hundreds of volunteers you will be the face of Macmillan, sending out communications, responding to queries and leading at events. You will build effective relationships with volunteers and colleagues to ensure a joined-up approach to volunteering. Your warmth and communication skills will allow you to engage with people from all backgrounds, understanding and responding to their different motivations for supporting Macmillan.
You will be passionate about the importance of delivering a consistent and excellent experience to ensure volunteers continue to choose to help our charity, and use data and insight to help find opportunities, identify which have the biggest impact, and show the power of volunteering. You’ll also be developing our most committed volunteers to lead others, and expand how much we can achieve for people living with cancer.
About you
- You will have demonstrable experience and knowledge of volunteering and fundraising activities
- You have an ability to inspire volunteers, face-to-face and through informative written communications
- Your organisation and time management skills will be excellent
- You will be able to provide examples of volunteering best practice, e.g. the Macmillan Volunteering Quality Standards
- You will be able to model Macmillan's values of Heart, Strength and Ambition
- Personal experience of Macmillan challenge events, collections or volunteering will be highly beneficial
