Job summary

The UKHSA Regions Directorate are looking to appoint a talented and enthusiastic Deputy Director of Regional Operations reporting to the UKHSA Director of Regions.

The postholder will lead change programmes to develop the operating model for the directorate and UKHSA regions. They will lead development of the Region’s Health Protection Network and develop approaches to joint working to effectively manage both demand and capacity across the directorate to enable delivery of the acute response as well as strategic programmes.

The postholder will lead programme areas linked to UKHSA national strategic priorities, lead matrix teams and networks to deliver on those priorities nationally and contribute to developing a comprehensive health protection system across England, working closely with colleagues at a regional, national and sometimes international level.

The successful candidate will be based at one of the main regional offices. The directorate operates in line with UKHSA guidance, and therefore work in a hybrid model with staff expected to attend site 40-50% of their time. On non-office days, the individual may work from home. Other travel may be required.

  • Provide visible leadership and direction for the strategic oversight of the UKHSA contribution to protecting the public’s health and reducing health inequalities through interventions to protect the population by preventing and mitigating hazards and threats.

Service Delivery and Improvement

  • Oversee work with Deputy Directors to ensure that information systems are integrated ensuring synergy between strategic milestones and objectives. Monitor, interpret and quality assure progress against deliverables.

Management & Leadership

  • Develop staff members to be the best they can be through highly effective internal communications, appropriate delegation, effective appraisal and mentoring, and visible leadership.

Training

  • Act as Head of Profession for Public Health.
  • Build and maintain high performing teams through organisational and professional development, focussing on UKHSA values, ethics and behaviours.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate

  • Strong experience of communicable disease control in a wide variety of settings including out of hours on call.
  • Experience and demonstrable competency in dealing with environmental hazards/chemical incidents.
  • Experience of emergency planning
  • Media experience demonstrating delivery of effective health behaviour or health protection messages

Post Location

Your contractual and operational base will be one of the main UKHSA regional office. The role will include hybrid working which allows for staff who can operate remotely at home and in the office, to fulfil their role and responsibilities in line with the team and UKHSA’s policies and guidance. The successful candidate will be expected to attend site 40% of their working time.
