Job Description

Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) are looking to recruit a forward-thinking and motivated locum Consultant Cardiologist with Specialist interest in Coronary Intervention to join our team of 7 cardiology consultants delivering our cardiology services. The posts present an excellent opportunity for an experienced clinician with comprehensive understanding of cardiac care and coronary intervention to join our dynamic team committed to the delivery of the highest standard of care.

The Trust also has excellent postgraduate and research facilities and is an Associate Teaching Hospital of the University of Manchester. The Trust is also working with Edge Hill University and supporting the new Medical school resulting in opportunities to be involved in undergraduate education. Study leave for CPD is supported and assistance with funding is provided up to an agreed limit.

Key results from the job holder include:
INPATIENT COMMITMENT

There are a total of 25 cardiology beds. Cardiology patients are admitted on the cardiology ward (14 beds) and Coronary care Unit (11 beds). The consultant will be responsible for the patients admitted under his care and will be supported by a Specialist Registrar, Core Medical Trainee (CT) and FY1 Doctor.

OUTPATIENT COMMITMENT

All the 7 cardiologists hold outpatient clinics based at Thomas Linacre Centre at Wigan, at Leigh Infirmary, Platt Bridge Health centre or Wrightington Hospital, as well as virtual clinics.

ON CALL

The post holder does not take part in the acute General Medicine unselected take. However, they are expected to take part in the Cardiology on call rota with a 1 in 7 commitment. The consultant when on call will be responsible for providing 7 day in-reach cardiology opinion to patients admitted on the emergency floor, the Medical admission units, ITU/HDU and other specialities in the hospital, in rotation with the existing Cardiologists. In addition, they will go to the Cardiology ward to see patients who are unwell, who have not been seen by a cardiologist since admission or are awaiting discharge.

Patients presenting with ST elevation MI, requiring Primary PCI are dealt with by A&E doctors and referred directly to the two Heart Attack Centres in Manchester but may infrequently need advice by the on-call cardiologist.

On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

The Cardiology department at WWL is spread across two sites. The cardiology department at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan is located in a purpose built area. It has a Reception Area / Waiting Room, Reception Room/Reception Office, 3 Echo Rooms, 2 Exercise Laboratory, 1 Lung function room, 2 ECG cubicles, event station rooms, Offices for Cardiac Physiologists, Staff Room.

The two state of art Cardiac catheter Labs, with its 7 bedded Day care Unit are situated adjacent to the Cardiology Department and has been fully operational since 2005. An extension of the day-case unit (Radial Lounge) has opened recently.

The cardiology department at Leigh Infirmary has a large Reception area / Waiting room, 2 echo room, 1 Exercise Laboratory, 1 analysis room for event recorders 2 Pacing rooms, 1 lung function room, room and 2 ECG cubicles.

CORONARY CARE UNIT

There is 11 bedded state of art Coronary Care Unit at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan. It has all the modern facilities for Temporary Pacing, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump, CPAP and facilities for DC Cardioversion. It treats approximately 1,000 patients a year. It is situated adjacent to the cardiac catheter lab.

CARDIAC CATHETER LABORATORY

There are two state of the art Cardiac Catheter Laboratory with facilities for rotational atherectomy, IVUS, OCT and pressure wire. There are plans to obtain shock wave lithotripsy in the near future.

Applications are invited to apply for a fixed term post of locum Consultant Cardiologist with Specialist interest in Coronary Intervention, to provide a comprehensive cardiac care to patients at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan and Leigh Infirmary, Leigh. The post is initially being advertised for an initial period of 6 to 12 months only. Successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply for the substantive post in future.

A very successful Coronary Intervention programme has been running since 2007 at the RAIE Wigan site. The service is supported by 3 Interventional Cardiologists from Wigan and 3 visiting Interventional Cardiologists from Salford and MFT. There is availability of IVUS, OCT, Pressure wire systems (Resting-FFR and conventional FFR), rotational atherectomy and IVL.

It is expected that the new appointee will maintain the high standards already set, will bring fresh ideas and innovations and will further develop the Coronary interventional programme in the Northwest Sector Catheter Lab, based at Wigan, in partnership with the other Catheter Labs in the Greater Manchester and the existing Interventional Cardiologists of the Northwest Sector (Bolton, Salford & Wigan). The appointee should be fully trained in percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) and should currently be a high-volume PCI operator. The new appointee will get at least 2 catheter lab sessions per week at the Cardiac Cather Lab in Wigan and other cardiac clinical sessions. There may be an opportunity to partake in Greater Manchester PPCI rota which would be subject to discussion and agreement with Manchester Hospitals Foundation Trust.

A highly successful Heart Failure Service has been in place since 2000. It is led by a Cardiologist and supported by two Acute Heart Failure Specialist nurses and four Community Heart Failure Specialist Nurses. There is an integrated Heart Failure Service with a Community Heart Failure Clinic based at Platt Bridge Health Centre.

There is also a very well-developed Pacing/Device service. Brady Pacing is currently performed at the Cath Lab in Wigan and Complex Device Implantation is carried out at Royal Bolton Hospital. This service is supported by the 3 Cardiologists from the Northwest Sector.

There are multiple cardiac imaging modalities, to support the Coronary Intervention service, including Trans Thoracic Echocardiography, Trans Oesophageal Echocardiography, Stress echocardiography and Nuclear Myocardial Perfusion Scan. We intend to start CT Coronary angiography in the very near future. Cardiac MRI is performed in the nearby tertiary centres in Manchester.

The new appointee will be joining the 7 substantive consultants and 5 visiting consultants in this well-established cardiology department, which is known for its clinical excellence, research opportunities and postgraduate training.
