Multidisciplinary Day Registered Veterinary Nurse

Salary: £31,000 - £35,000 depending on experience

We accept referrals for Orthopaedic Surgery, Soft Tissue Surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Dentistry, Cardiology, Anaesthesia, Dermatology, Diagnostic Imaging, Oncology, Physiotherapy as well as Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) and a Pain Clinic.
We have comprehensive and established clinical and non-clinical programmes for training, development and CPD.
You can find us in Hampshire, just south of Winchester, close to the M3 and national and international transport links. We are in a serene countryside setting with state-of-the-art facilities and are available to look after pets 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Your role and responsibilities
To provide outstanding Nursing care to patients in all departments.
- Have knowledge of all departments and equipment (Wards - Dog, Cat and Isolation, Soft tissue, orthopaedics, Neurology, Medicine, Imaging, and Anaesthesia).
- Rotate around all departments.
- Adhere at all times to practice policies and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) relating to specific tasks and departments.
- Monitoring of in-patients, carrying out TPR measurements (Temperature, pulse and respiration) and other tests as indicated on the ward sheet.
- Monitoring of recovery (from sedation or General Anaesthesia), and those receiving IVFT and/or transfusion.
- Carrying out blood samples, parameter measurements including blood pressure etc. (where necessary).
- Calculating, preparing and administration of pre-prescribed medications, as directed by a clinician (Intra-venous, intra-muscular, Subcutaneous injections, oral).
- Walking canine patients outside for toileting purposes and attending to feline in-patients.
- Appropriate feeding of all patients including tube feeding where necessary.
- Restraining canine and feline patients in a safe and secure manner (in accordance to Health and safety of self, colleagues and patients) for procedures, for blood sampling and administration of medications etc.
- Provide effective and timely communications with the Senior Ward Nurse when necessary about in-patients.
- Assist Nursing assistants with appropriate cleaning of kennels, feeding and walking of patients, and provide guidance in the correct and safe performance of their duties.
- Monitoring General Anaesthetics and sedations.
- Assisting with surgical and medical procedures.
- Ensure equipment is clean, well maintained, and sterile (where applicable)
- Maintaining hygiene standards, including observation of barrier and cytotoxic nursing protocols.
- Setting and maintaining nursing standards to a professional level as expected of a nurse at this grade.
- Keep tidy, accurate and legible patent records of all treatments, events and communications.
- Assist in providing training for Student Veterinary Nurses.
- Respond to owner communication in a professional and sympathetic manner.
- Record all communications with owners or clinicians on the patient paper or computer records.
- Be a positive role model to motivate and encourage staff.
- Take instruction/ guidance from senior members of the team.
- Work well alone as well as a member of a team.
- When there are quiet periods find other jobs to do. Cleaning and tidying, stocking consumables. If unsure ask a senior member of staff.
- Nursing must achieve a very high standard of care.
- Be a positive and enthusiastic member of the team.
- Always have a professional and tidy appearance even when not expecting public interaction.
- Be keen to improve clinical skills and improve knowledge and be proactive in ensuring CPD records are up to date.
- May be required to undertake other tasks as required.
