Laboratory Scientist I
Due to continued growth, we are looking for a Laboratory Scientist I to join our Product Support Technical team on a fixed-term contract basis for an initial 2 year period. This opportunity will be based at our Pencoed facility.
About QuidelOrtho, Pencoed:
QuidelOrtho has been manufacturing products in South Wales for over 40 years. Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, based in Pencoed, employs over 500 people who are involved in the manufacture and supply of clinical laboratory and immunohematology products to sites across the globe.
Our Pencoed team manufacture a large menu of immunohematology products used in transfusion medicine; in addition to large menu of immunoassay products encompassing a range of disease categories.

Your new role:
In your new role as Laboratory Scientist I you will be reporting to the Product Support lead, the key activities undertaken in this role will include developing a working knowledge to conduct a combination of: a) relevant hands-on practical work as part of the general support function of the Product Support department, using multiple analytical techniques and instrumentation within the laboratory; and/ or b) using project techniques or c) investigational tools.
Individuals will perform interpretation and analysis of scientific data and on occasion may take the opportunity to present data to an audience. They will ensure that the laboratory is operating in accordance with all relevant quality, compliance and safety systems and all quality documentation practises are followed.
What you’ll be doing:
Performing assigned laboratory practical work, assigned project or troubleshooting work. Whilst operating in the laboratory this can include housekeeping, equipment calibration activities and assigned routine maintenance. For project or troubleshooting work, the individual is responsible for collating, analysing and interpretation of data. Document all work according to QuidelOrtho standards and procedures. Acts positively to and acts on suggestions for improvement and embraces training opportunities.
Develop the ability to plan own work effectively, gives support, assistance and shows confidence to make useful suggestions to peers.
Build the necessary technical knowledge through targeted, scheduled and self-directed learning to fully participate in projects which can span many areas of the business or participate in troubleshooting investigations as directed. Performs assigned small scale investigations or projects as directed.
Provide timely updates on work activities to all relevant parties. Anticipates needed information and disseminates it appropriately.
Maintain a safe working environment through the proactive identification of hazards and risks and compliance with UK Health and Safety Legislation.
Develop proposals for process improvement opportunity generation and presents findings.
Be responsible for and assure integrity and quality in accordance with QuidelOrtho's record keeping practices, of all supporting documentation and quality records for projects and investigations.
Assist in the implementation of improvements as directed and remain open minded to innovative concepts and ideas.
Drive and coordinate continuous improvement of processes that operate within the group to provide consistently high levels of customer service.
What you’ll need to succeed:
Degree educated in relevant Scientific discipline, or relevant experience.
Experienced in performing laboratory work and use of a range of statistical (Minitab or equivalent) tools during investigations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Positive can-do attitude with Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments, take on stretch assignments and work effectively in cross-functional teams.
Computer literate, good laboratory practical skills, can record experimental work accurately and at a minimum perform data manipulation and analysis.
Possess an understanding of the principles of Immunoassay / Immunohaematology.
Demonstrates effective teamwork & collaboration skills across functions.
Demonstrates situational adaptability skills, to respond to rapid change and maintain output in a dynamic and changing environment whilst meeting project timelines.
Demonstrates commitment to achieving agreed goals and a sense of urgency to get the job done when appropriate.
Ability to plan own time and work effectively, can reshape plans accordingly.
