Animal Data Scientist - Higher Scientific Officer
Agri-Food and BioSciences Institute (AFBI) is a leading provider of scientific research and services to government, non-governmental organisations and commercial organisations. We are sponsored by our key stakeholder, the Department of Agriculture Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA)
An opportunity currently exists within AFBI for a permanent HSO within LPS branch within the Sustainable Agri-Food Science Division. The successful applicant will report to a Senior Scientific Officer within the livestock genetics research team.
The main duties of the post will include:
- To provide exploitation, and modelling support for the sustainable livestock production research programme
- To support in the complete data management process in Northern Ireland Farm Animal Biobank (NIFAB) through develop models using animal precision phenotypes, environmental data, multi-omics and meta-omics data to understand the biological background of traits and develop prediction models for livestock production.
- To identify and contribute to the development and delivery of research opportunities related to the exploitation and modelling of NIFAB data.
- To prepare, material for publication in national and international journals and for presentation at international conferences.
- To design and develop of improved strategies, processes and equipment related to data storage, handling, visualisation, modelling, and utilisation of data management and modelling.
- To establish and maintain external collaboration to establish collaborative projects and share expertise within and outside of AFBI and to understand the best practices in the field.
- To maintain up-to-date knowledge and skill in relation to data management and modelling methodologies.
- To deliver specialist advice and act as an expert on the coordination, collation, and analysis of livestock production system data, providing informed opinion to AFBI and other scientists on data collection and management issues, performing analysis in support of this task.
- To manage staff and resources.
This list is not exhaustive, and the successful candidate will be required to carry out other duties as allocated by management.
We are looking for a candidate that matches one of the following criteria;
- PhD in a biological, mathematical, statistics, engineering or appropriate IT or data science related subject with experience of handling large datasets, numerical modelling and data analytics
- A postgraduate's degree (equivalent to level 7) in a biological, mathematical, statistics, engineering or appropriate IT or data science related subject and six months demonstrable experience of handling large datasets, numerical modelling and data analytics
- A degree (equivalent to level 6) in a biological, mathematical, statistics, engineering or appropriate IT or data science related subject and at least one years’ demonstrable experience of handling large datasets, numerical modelling and data analytics
