Job Description
We have a new opportunity for a Senior Scientist who will join a dynamic and fast-moving Peptide Chemistry team and will be primarily responsible for overseeing the purification of peptides and Bicyclic peptides (Bicycles). Working as part of the Discovery team you will be responsible for advancing early stage drug discovery projects from concept to molecule and for delivering peptides and reagents to the Discovery teams to help drive Structure Activity Relationship studies.
The role will involve close interaction with both the Biology, Chemistry, DMPK and informatics teams to organise and schedule laboratory and project activities and to review data and progress. Additional interactions will be with our US team and external collaborators in our partnership deals as appropriate. You should be highly self-motivated, well organised, diligent in record keeping, have an excellent working knowledge of the drug discovery process and be able to perform consistently at the highest level.
Whilst we are recruiting for a Senior Scientist, we are also open to an Associate Principal Scientist depending on skills and experience.
Key responsibilities:
- Purification of peptides and Bicycles by mass directed preparative HPLC
- Use of a variety of analytical techniques (such as LC-MS, MALDI-TOF) to characterize Bicycles
- Scheduling peptide purification tasks in coordination with other functional groups
- Troubleshooting and maintenance of prep-MS and other peptide purification related instruments
- Participation in optimization and automation improvements for enhancing peptide purification capacity and efficiency
- Entry of peptides into databases and repositories, ensuring accurate record keeping and adhering to standard operating procedures
- A range of complex lab procedures to support wet chemistry
- Clear and accurate record keeping
- Emerging people leader seeking to develop direct line reports
Qualifications
Essential:
- Educated in Chemistry or related Chemical Science with extensive industrial experience
- Highly experienced in the development and analysis of mass directed preparative HPLC for the purification of small molecules, and ideally peptides
- Advanced and specialized expertise and experience working with peptides in an industrial setting
- Development of suitable methods and interpretation of a variety of analytical techniques (such as HPLC, LC-MS, MALDI-TOF) to characterize Bicycles®
- Excellent problem solver and adapts well to changing situations
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective interaction with other teams both locally and remotely
- Consistent team player with strong communication and motivational skills
- Experience in leading significant and unique projects
- Excellent organisational skills and close attention to detail
- Confident with requirements of data integrity and use of Electronic Lab Notebooks
- Good time management skills and ability to work to tight deadlines
- Innovative, entrepreneurial, enjoys working in a fast-paced environment
- Experience of leading or mentoring others
Desirable:
- Highly skilled in automation optimisation particularly of peptide synthesis, purification, and analysis
- Prior involvement in evaluating novel technologies
- Demonstrated experience in optimizing processes and techniques
- Knowledge of solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) using both manual methods and automated peptide synthesizers including use of a microwave synthesiser
