QIAGEN Manchester is a world leading centre for molecular diagnostic applications, expanding and enhancing the delivery of life-improving diagnostic systems for existing and emerging medical needs, with a focus on companion diagnostics and personalized healthcare in infectious disease and oncology. We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Scientist within our Molecular Assay Development team supporting the development of new and existing molecular diagnostic applications utilizing state of the art RNA and DNA technologies.
Key responsibilities:
- Planning and coordinating studies for small teams, writing protocols, reviewing and approving documents within design control procedures.
- Conducting general laboratory housekeeping and laboratory procedures to support the development of new diagnostic products across different workflows for example qPCR, Digital PCR, Next Generation Sequencing and high throughput automation platforms. Becoming a knowledge expert for specific development workflows, applications and diagnostic systems
- Troubleshooting and technical interpretation of data, evaluating and documenting studies, analyzing and presenting results in written reports.
- Responsible for ensuring scientific integrity in defined studies design and for updating estimates of lab-work, protocols and report writing to senior scientist.
- Required to maintain assigned trackers for sample traceability and data integrity.
- Working collaboratively with team members and colleagues from other functions to ensure projects are delivered safely, effectively and efficiently and to the required quality and regulatory standards.
- In partnership with the Senior Scientists, coaching and mentoring of junior staff to ensure development of a learning environment.
Position Requirements
Typically PhD-level or equivalent laboratory experience within molecular biology with the ability to plan and conduct laboratory experiments independently.
- Experience of primer design and PCR optimization
- Experience of relevant laboratory techniques including: processing biological samples; DNA extraction using manual extraction kits and/or automated instruments; qPCR manual setup and/or using automated instruments; PCR optimization.
- Strong technical knowledge alongside troubleshooting, data analysis and interpretation skills.
- An effective team player with excellent communication skills. Ideally experience supervising others.
- Proven organisational skills, self-motivation, accountability and attention to detail.
- Laboratory experience in the following areas would be desirable: working in a regulated environment; infectious disease or oncology; precision serial dilutions; DNA sequencing; working with a category 2 suite; using automated molecular diagnostic systems; next generation sequencing; advanced multiplex applications; miRNA extraction; digital PCR.
