(A joint venture with Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust and East Surrey Hospital)
We are looking for a full-time, energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated Senior BMS with appropriate qualifications and/or relevant experience to join the leadership team of the Infection & Immunity Sciences (I&IS) at Wexham Park Hospital Microbiology departments for Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS).
Successful candidate must be adaptable, able to multi-task between workload management and supporting the BMS team on the bench and take responsibility for IT within the department as a deputy IT lead.
Applications are invited from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who have completed their Specialist portfolio training and has extensive experience in a specialized Microbiology laboratory setting.
You will be expected to work according to our working time compliant shifts and will be required to work between the Hub sites to maintain training and service requirements.
You will work in rotation with other senior members of staff to manage sections of the laboratory within our team. You must be keen to embrace new ways of working and develop your knowledge and skills. You will be expected to participate in the band 7 rota, covering weekends, public/bank holidays and on call duties during the week.
Responsible for the day to day organisation of the laboratory, managing staff and resources to provide a high quality, efficient and cost effective specialist diagnostic microbiology service.
To perform the diagnostic microbiology examination and reporting of specimens received in order to aid patient treatment and care. To use interpretive skills on culture plates and complex analysers combined with the Laboratory Information Management System in order to deliver the diagnostic microbiology service to our users.
To provide teaching and training for more junior members of staff.
To have responsibility for IT issues within the department , Workload Management, service improvement or bench/section training.
To validate and verify new equipment and methods in the laboratory conforming to UKAS standards.
The diagnostic work of the department includes processing, for example, blood, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, faeces, sputum, tissues and diverse secretions. Processed samples are then interpreted for the presence of pathogens; these could be bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic.

Some of the responsibilities:
1. To be responsible for the organisation of the laboratory and allocation of staff alongside IT duties
2. To participate in the analytical work of all aspects of the microbiology department to ensure that the most efficient microbiology service is provided for the users of the department.
3. To work as part of the team, or independently, processing specimens and producing accurate relevant diagnostic results, by the interpretation of clinical information and specimen type against the organisms isolated or detected. To initiate and interpret microscopy examinations, complex biochemical profiles, agglutination patterns and antibiotic sensitivity patterns as necessary. To make judgements and initiate follow up tests as required.
4. To monitor the performance of other staff to ensure that departmental standards of work are maintained
5. To ensure the departments quality standards are maintained and to troubleshoot any areas failing to meet these standards
6. To be responsible for maintaining and producing accurate records pertaining to work and quality control, including the recording of findings on the Laboratory Information Management Computer System. To act on any results and initiate corrective action as necessary.
7. To participate in the audit of quality control measures within the department and to present this data to the Lead BMS in a timely fashion.
8. To undertake complex audits as required and report using spreadsheets and databases.
9. To manage the validation and roll out of training on new equipment ensuring the technology is maximised for patient care.
To comply with and implement the Hospital and Pathology Safety policies and to ensure they are followed.
10. To take a lead and participate in all aspects of the service including both the core and non core hours and the on-call rota as required
