About us

UCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas, and from molecular scale to complex systems. It is undergoing a period of rapid growth, and is the home of the EPSRC “Frontier Engineering” Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering, as well as the Electrochemical Innovation Laboratory. For more information see www.ucl.ac.uk/chemeng The Electrochemical Innovation Lab (EIL) is a world-leading centre of research excellence. One of the largest and most dynamic groups in the world specializing in electrochemical science and technology, our activities continue to expand with a new initiative, the Advanced Propulsion Lab (part of UCL East) and substantial research funding from the Faraday Institution. For more information see https://www.ucl.ac.uk/electrochemical-innovation-lab/

About the role

The post holder will be required to undertake research to develop a modelling platform for Li-S batteries based on the microstructural characteristics of the electrodes, including novel architectures that have and will be developed throughout the project. Real world Li-S cells will be imaged at varying states of charge and health to enable a fully parameterized physical model of operating batteries. A 3D image-based model has already been developed in the project, but it is computationally intensive and limits the volumes that can be studied. Pore network modelling will be deployed to reduce computational intensity and enable large electrodes to be realistically represented in the models. Main duties include: - To develop tools for the modelling of LiS batteries based on multi-scale 3D X-ray imaging data - To understand the transport properties of novel electrode structures developed in the programme via diffusivity, conductivity and pore network modelling - To use data from novel operando diagnostic and characterisation of Li-S battery electrodes to parametrise advanced battery models

About you

The ideal candidate will therefore have a strong background in electrochemical and physical modelling, as well as knowledge of characterisation techniques such as X-ray CT. A strong background in the modelling of porous media is vital for the role. This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa. Note: Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (salary £35,702-£37,548 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis). A full job description and person specification can be found at the bottom of the page. If you have any queries about this position, please contact Dr Rhodri Jervis rhodri.jervis@ucl.ac.uk, or Claire Saunders claire.saunders@ucl.ac.uk
