Reports to: Head of Animal Services

North Clwyd Animal Rescue is committed to the welfare of companion animals; to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs and cats. Continuing to build on our reputation to promote responsible animal welfare and support the local community through education knowledge and expertise.

The Training & Behaviour role will work along-side two other on site Supervisors (Animal Care Supervisors and Animal Adoption supervisor) and report to the Head of Animal Services.

The Training & Behaviour Role will be responsible for the team of Behaviour Assessors and oversee and support the team with all animal assessments and training. The Training & Behaviour role will also support behaviour modification programmes devised by Behaviourist Adam Hobbs.

In addition, developing a close working relationship with the Centre Veterinary Surgeon will also be needed. This will ensure each animal has every opportunity to be responsibly rehomed with a bespoke approach for each animal in our care.

1. Purpose of the job
 To lead and line manage the Behaviour Assessor team providing a structured approach to ensure Training and Behaviour plans are implemented in a timely manner.
 To promote a values led culture developing and rewarding high-performance across the behaviour team to achieve the best service for all stakeholders.
 To work cohesively with the on-site Vets, Animal Care Supervisor and Animal adoption supervisor to ensure all animals on site are managed appropriately for their specific training and behavioural requirements and assessed in a timely manner with the aim of rehabilitating and enabling the responsible rehoming of dogs and cats that come into our care.
 To support the team with emotionally challenging situations and be calm under pressure

2. Principle tasks
 To lead and line-manage the team of Behaviour Assessors. Showcasing inspiring behaviours which develop coach and motivate individuals to achieve and exceed their objectives in line with NCAR strategic aims.
 Support the BA team to provide appropriate and relevant training to volunteers, work placement students and non-animal care related team members as appropriate.  To oversee the implementation of socialisation and enrichment programmes specific to individual needs for the animals on site and enable the team to provide expert advice for fosterers and adopters both pre and post adoption.
 To work cohesively with the Animal Care supervisor to promote the highest standards of care and welfare with timely behavioural interventions and training plans, and together manage risk with all animals on site.
 Manage the health and safety of all Behaviour Assessors, generating individual animal risk assessments as required to ensure animals are handled safely and that all incidents are recorded and investigated with additional control measures added as necessary.
 To work cohesively with the on-site veterinary surgeon and the veterinary care coordinator to ensure behavioural interventions are considered along with veterinary advice and guidance.
 To lead discussions on managing risk and the rehabilitation of long stay animals or those with complex behaviours including leading long stay animals
 Produce relevant protocols
 Ensure that all behaviour records are accurate and current and adhere to data protection guidelines where customer information is stored. Ensure all relevant administrative paperwork and external correspondence is processed in accordance with NCAR procedures, including working with the Adam to generate reports for the long stays. Supporting the Adam to oversee the production of behaviour reports written by the Behaviour Assessors for every animal on site and investigating any areas of concern and ensuring appropriate action is taken.
 When an animal is deemed to have a poor quality of life based on objective assessments and where rehabilitation isn’t possible and all other avenues have been explored, to act sensitively and compassionately. Reviewing the information from the Adam and BA team and being prepared to discuss if euthanasia is the most appropriate next step. Generating comprehensive reports and documentation to enable effective and thorough decision making.
 To work cohesively with the Animal Adoption supervisor and Animal care supervisors to ensure the Behaviour Assessor team fully support the Intake and Rehoming team to ensure throughput of animals is monitored and managed effectively
 To support the BA team to manage animal occupancy by working closely with Animal Care Supervisors and Animal Adoption supervisor to ensure that available animal accommodation is used efficiently.
 To provide on-site Duty Manager on the rare occasions when the Animal Care Supervisors or the Animal Adoption supervisors are unable to, (holiday or sickness etc).
 To work with the Animal Care and Animal Adoption supervisors to develop and implement appropriate training and development for new starters ensuring all training is aligned with up-to-date behaviour information.
 Positively promote a whole team approach, leading by example to ensure that all team members and volunteers are working together to deliver on our charitable objectives
 To work with the Head of Animal Services and other relevant heads of depts to promote the work we do and to ensure we are able to extend our impact through education and support to improve animal welfare in the wider community
 To undertake other duties as may reasonably be required. Whilst at work all employees are required to:
 Take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts and omissions.
 Be familiar with and comply with all NCARs policies and procedures.

3. Knowledge, skill and experience a) Education qualifications
 Excellent written & communication skills - essential
 Qualification in companion animal behaviour and welfare or relevant subject - desirable b) Professional/technical qualifications/Skills
 Proficient in using a range of Microsoft Office packages - essential
 Animal first aid- desirable
 First Aid at work - desirable
 Fire Marshall- desirable  Mental Health First aider – desirable c) Competence/Experience  Extensive experience of working in an animal welfare environment or similar - essential  Practical hands-on experience of handling dogs with a range of behaviour issues, ideally -in a rescue environment - essential
 Experience of working with cats with behaviour issues, ideally in a cattery setting - desirable
 Significant experience of leading, managing or supervising a team - essential
 Experience of managing health and safety in the workplace - essential
 An ability to make decisions and remain calm under pressure - essential
 Being adaptable with a positive can-do approach- essential SKILLS
 Proficient in Microsoft packages particularly Excel & Word - essential
 Database experience –- essential COMPETENCES Planning & decision making
