Job Description

Job Description
The role
Fugro is now recruiting for a Staff Laboratory Technician to join the Geotechnical Laboratory based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire. The laboratory uses state of the art equipment to analyse soil and rock samples from our projects around the world. Your role will be to perform these laboratory tests using data logging equipment, recording data in handwritten format and entering it into bespoke data processing templates.
This job is for you if:
  • You enjoy the responsibility of running projects autonomously and taking ownership of your work;
  • You have an interest in geotechnical testing;
  • You have a strong eye for detail and are able to competently and accurately follow set procedures and national standards whilst remaining focused on repetitive work;
  • The opportunity to work offshore once or twice a year for 4 weeks at a time (although this isn’t a requirement of the role).
Who you’ll be working with:
On a daily basis you will be working closely with a team of laboratory technicians and engineers although you will largely be working independently on your testing projects.
Here’s what a typical day would be like:
  • You will be running a series of tests on soil samples from a project as prescribed by the client;
  • Typically, you’ll be on a test for a 6 to 8-week period once fully trained;
  • You will complete all relevant test forms accurately and once complete, send the reports for review before they are submitted to the client.
Please note that whilst this position requires a 37.5hr week, the company may be able to offer flexibility around working hours and would be happy to discuss this at interview. However, weekend working, and overtime will be required from time to time.
Who we’re looking for:
Essential
  • Good standard of general education, including 5 + GCSE’s (including English, Maths and Science) or similar qualifications;
  • Good numeracy and literacy;
  • An eye for detail and an ability to follow procedures are vital;
  • Good IT skills, particularly the use of MS Excel;
  • Problem solving skills.
What we’ll offer you:
Benefits for this role include a competitive salary accompanied by an attractive package including contributory pension scheme, life assurance, 24 days annual leave, private medical insurance and a subsidised restaurant.
