Job Description

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to fill a Band 3 Technician post within the Blood Science Department at Prince Philip Hospital. The post is part time, 27 hours per week, and there is a requirement to participate on the evening, weekend and Bank Holiday rota (there is extra remuneration for staff on this rota).

The successful candidate will be required to undertake a wide range of duties to include data entry into the laboratory computer system, handling and processing samples, loading and unloading samples from the Blood Sciences analysers. Full training will be provided upon commencement. This will provide an interesting job for the successful candidate in all aspects of laboratory work.

The successful candidate will be required to be flexible to the needs of the service and to undertake a wide range of duties appropriate to the section as listed:

To receipt and check samples for analysis.

To take action to deal with mislabelled or incorrectly collected samples.

To identify and deal with samples that require a non-routine protocol e.g. specimens for fast-tracking – emergency / clinic or are unstable / labile or require high risk procedures to be implemented. To undertake sample preparation and pre-analytical quality assurance checks

To store and dispose of laboratory samples in accordance to laboratory protocols

As required: To safely prepare and package samples for dispatch and posting to external reference laboratories. Ensuring that samples including those of high risk, are correctly labelled and sent under correct temperature, conditions and carriers.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 11,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. We do this in partnership with our three local authorities and public, private and third sector colleagues, including our volunteers, through:

Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest;

Seven community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire Hospital Health and Social Care Resource Centre in Pembrokeshire;

48 general practices (four of which are managed practices), 47 dental practices (including three orthodontic), 99 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only providers and 11 health centres;

Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.
