Job Description

This is newly created post and we are looking for an exceptional adaptive and engaged Nursing leader who puts patient safety and Nursing standards at the forefront of their practice. We are seeking applications from nurses with extensive post qualifying experience of working within a multidisciplinary setting which includes experience working in Acute Medicine. You will play a pivotal role in the development and leadership of the Team

The successful applicant will demonstrate full understanding of the current issues within Nursing, Acute Medicine and Urgent Care whilst also be capable of supporting the Directorate to continue to shape and transform patient experience and provision of services.

This is a senior nursing leadership role in which the post holder will support the Associate Director of Nursing for the Division to provide clinical leadership in the Urgent Care Directorate and Division, ensuring the delivery of consistently high standards of care, strategic development and integration of patient and staff feedback into service delivery.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Nursing the post holder will work in partnership with the Directorate Triumvirate to be specifically responsible for the delivery of nursing quality standards across the Directorate and lead on improvements integrating the Divisional staff survey and patient survey results to make improvements.

The post holder will also still have professional accountability and leadership for the Nye Bevan Assessment Unit. They will also have a particular responsibility to lead the development of Clinical Governance and Service Improvement. Working with the Associate Director of Nursing to provide professional leadership, advice and support for the Division to ensure there is consistency of practice, high standards of care with a strong patient safety focus.

To support the Associate Director of Nursing to provide professional leadership for nurses within the Division.

To give expert professional advice on a range of highly complex nursing care issues to the Divisional Management Team. To include where appropriate statutory and regulatory nursing requirements providing assurance and taking responsibility for their delivery.

Working with the Associate Director of Nursing and in partnership with the Divisional Leadership Team, assume accountability for all aspects of patient experience, safety, quality, and governance across the Division.

Be responsible for the advancement of nursing evidence based best practice and the implementation of policy.

The post holder will represent the Associate Director of Nursing at Divisional and corporate level.

In partnership with the Associate Director of Nursing, Divisional Director and Divisional Manager, ensure the Division meets all external and internal regulatory requirements.

Ensure Divisional compliance for nursing with the Trust’s E-Rostering policy, KPIs and alignment to any nursing productivity and efficiency guidance.

To ensure effective complex nursing workforce planning and deployment of staff across the Directorate to enable safe and effective delivery of services and care.

Work in partnership with the Divisional leadership team to ensure delivery of high-quality nursing standards, focusing on the assessment and accreditation process across the division.

Responsible for the improvement of care delivery and staff wellbeing in the directorate by integrating the directorate and divisional staff and patient survey results into practice.

Leadership

As part of the Divisional Leadership Team the post holder will provide inspirational leadership so that all nurses in the Division are engaged and motivated to provide safe and effective patient care in support of the objectives of the Division, the corporate objectives of the Trust and the Nursing, Midwifery & AHP strategy.

To give expert professional advice on a range of highly complex nursing care issues to the Divisional Boards. To include where appropriate statutory and regulatory nursing requirements giving assurance and taking responsibility for their delivery.

Lead on the Quality Improvement work associated with the Trust Assessment and Accreditation framework for the Directorate and act as an expert advisor to the division in collaboration with the Lead Nurse for Quality Assurance.

Maintain own professional knowledge and competence to meet professional registration standards, revalidation, and the requirements of the role.

Act as a coach/mentor to enhance the performance and capability of others for succession planning. Provide constructive feedback to support and enable others to develop, increase skills and abilities.

Support the Associate Director of Nursing and Deputy to lead the advancement of nursing practice to improve patient experience within the Directorate focusing on the patient survey, complaints and friends and family feedback.

Work in partnership with the Director of Nursing & Midwifery and the Senior Nursing Team to develop and implement the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional Strategy. Effectively communicate the strategy through the organisation, Division and across the wider health economy identifying opportunities to work collaboratively.

Act as a Pathway to Excellence® ambassador for the Trust and within the division, embedding the standards throughout the Division and Directorate.

Ensure robust escalation and contingency plans are embedded from the nursing perspective to respond to times of increased demands.

Participate in the Trusts Nursing and Midwifery Board and forums, taking the lead as required across the organisation on key identified work streams.

Support the Associate Director of Nursing to lead the Divisional nursing forums and councils.

Deputise for the Associate Director of Nursing as directed and in their absence.

Ensure effective systems are in place to provide appropriate and timely responses to patients and their families who have cause to complain about standards of care and ensure processes are in place to learn from adverse events and complaints which results in changes in practice where appropriate.

Lead on the infection prevention, control, cleanliness, and environmental standards for the directorate.

Present, facilitate, train, and teach formally and informally across a range of clinical/professional topics within sphere of expertise, developing training materials and presentations where required.

Patient and family centred care

To jointly lead on the quality assurance and risk management process within the Division alongside the Associate Director of Nursing and Divisional Director. Ensure there are robust governance structures for the prevention and management of complaints, clinical incidents, and serious untoward incidents.

Support the Associate Director of Nursing to lead the nursing workforce to ensure the fundamentals and essential aspects of care are met, including cleanliness, the prevention and control of infection and all aspects of quality care.

Support the Associate Director of Nursing to lead on the delivery of patient experience performance against the nursing quality and safety agenda, ensuring performance is monitored against a range of corporate and local indicators, providing assurance to the Nursing & Midwifery Board and the Trust Board.

Be responsible for the safe nursing care of all patients in the Division in the absence of the Associate Director of Nursing.

Support the Associate Director of Nursing to act as the Divisional lead for safeguarding, dementia care and those patients with a learning difficulty. Work closely with the Director of Nursing & Midwifery and Head of Safeguarding to ensure appropriate corporate and operational delivery of safeguarding policies and procedures.

Together with the Associate Director of Nursing provide Divisional leadership in Infection Prevention & Control. Work closely with the Director of Nursing & Midwifery (Director of Infection Prevention & Control) and the Matron for Infection Prevention to ensure harm free care for patients and compliance with policies and procedures.

Ensure all Trust key performance nursing indicators are monitored, and results reported through Divisional boards, and that all actions identified are addressed in a timely manner.

Lead the implementation of directorate specific key national quality and patient safety initiatives by providing expert leadership, support and guidance to Divisional Directors, Clinical Directors and Directorate Matrons.

Have significant input into the development of clinical policies, procedures, and guidelines. Provide expertise and support to Divisional leaders to identify drivers for change, opportunities for growth, improvement and redesign of services and initiation of strategic plans within the directorate.

Support the delivery of the wider corporate professional agenda including development of innovative strategies to enable a strong and empowered workforce that is fit for purpose at all levels and equipped to deliver excellence in care.

Responsible for ensuring that excellent standards of care are achieved in the designated clinical areas as evidenced through Nursing/Midwifery dashboards within the directorate.

Ensure that standards of care within designated clinical areas are maintained at a high standard in accordance with CQC, National and Trust Standard.

Work with Practice and Professional Development colleagues to ensure the development of nursing practice is evidence based, in response to service need and consistent with local, national, and trust-wide nursing policies, procedures and guidelines.

Lead on the development of and participate in relevant audit activity in the clinical setting and respond to results by formulating action plans and leading changes where necessary.

Provide highly specialist advice and training that may include the performance of clinical interventions in a ward environment.

In conjunction with designated medical lead and Directorate Manager, be responsible for high quality co-ordinated service for patients.

Provide expert nursing knowledge and skills to undertake the operational management and strategic development of the Urgent Care Directorate.

Corporate and management responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Director of Nursing the post holder will work in partnership with the Divisional Leadership Team to be specifically responsible for the delivery of nursing quality standards and patient safety in the Division. Working with the Associate Director of Nursing to provide professional leadership, advice, and support for the Division to ensure there is consistency of practice and high standards of care.

In the absence of the Associate Director of Nursing and working in partnership with the Divisional Leadership Team assume accountability for all aspects of patient safety, quality, and governance across the Division. This will include analysing highly complex and at times conflicting information from a variety of sources to make recommendations to the Divisional Board and to the Director of Nursing & Midwifery.

Provide professional advice on a range of highly complex nursing care issues to the Divisional Management Board. This will include statutory and regulatory nursing requirements.
