Job Description

The Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA) is offering an apprenticeship post based at the James Paget hospital to train as a Biomedical Scientist.

The Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA) is a managed pathology network providing Clinical Biochemistry, Immunology, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Andrology and Microbiology services to primary and secondary care providers across Norfolk and Waveney. The network has a hub and spoke configuration with laboratories and network management based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital representing the hub, and laboratories based at the James Paget University Hospital, Gorleston and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn representing the spokes.

EPA has a successful history of training Biomedical Scientists and has full training approval by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). The apprentice will receive training in Haematology, Coagulation, Chemistry and Blood Transfusion and will be primarily based at the James Paget hospital, Gt. Yarmouth. Occasional attendance at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital maybe required.

This 4-year fixed term apprenticeship post will require the candidate to undertaking a L6 Applied Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) degree apprenticeship at the University of East Anglia. EPA has worked closely with the UEA to develop this (IBMS) accredited degree apprenticeship program. The degree program adopts a blended approach to teaching with most of the lectures delivered remotely, although there will be a requirement to attend occasional days at the UEA campus in Norwich as well as work-based learning.Healthcare Science Practitioner (Applied Biomedical Science) Apprenticeship (uea.ac.uk)

This post has a 2 stage interview process. The initial interview will be conducted with NNUHFT staff on Tuesday the 15thAugust. Shortlisted candidates will need to attend a second interview via MS Teams with the UEA for acceptance onto the degree programme on Thursday 17thAugust 2023.

For the duration of your Apprenticeship, you will be appointed under Annex 21 of Band 5 (Agenda for Change). You will receive 60% of the Band 5 salary. Upon successful completion of the Apprenticeship and receipt of Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration, you will be eligible to apply for a Band 5 post.

The apprentice will undertake training and completion of the L6 Apprenticeship and BSc (Hons) degree in Applied Biomedical science at the University of East Anglia (UEA), to complete the institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Certificate of Competence (CoC) registration portfolio. On completion of the 4-year degree program the apprentice will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health Care & Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist.

The apprentice will learn and perform under supervision a range of complex analyses in Haematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Transfusion Science and Reception department. They will maintain the Laboratory Information Service on a daily basis allowing the service users access to accurate and updated patient care test results.

When competent, the apprentice will help train and demonstrate methodologies on complex analytical equipment to medical staff, clinical scientists, other BMS staff, new entrant staff, students and medical laboratory assistants (MLA) as appropriate.

The apprentice will support the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service, all staff are expected to act as a role model to others in all aspects of their work and consistently demonstrate NNUH’s ‘PRIDE’ values of People focused, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence.
