Job Description

RGN 1st level registration, effective with the NMC.

To be able to demonstrate the ability to work autonomously; to develop specialist skills utilising previous experience and continuing professional development.

The post holder will be involved in interventional procedures, as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team not only assisting the radiologist but also undertaking pre- and post-procedural duties as outlined in more detail below. Working as a single nurse, the post holder will be responsible for training (where necessary) and supervising the ATOs in their multidisciplinary (clinical/patient related) roles within the department. The post holder will advise and direct the radiographers in clinical areas and provide appropriate support for patients undergoing all types of radiological examinations, from the simple to the complex.

General Duties and Responsibilities
1. Ensure personally that all Nursing and Midwifery Council Continuing Professional
Development requirements are met.
2. Ensure Trust policies and procedures are met in relation to personal professional
responsibilities.
3. Responsible for nursing advice to department policies and procedures. Assist with
their development.
4. Contribute to the appraisal of departmental patient information leaflets, update as
appropriate following national and Trust guidelines.
5. Responsible for providing advice on nursing care for the team (radiographers and
other members of the department) and act as a role model and resource for other
members of staff.
6. Possess and maintain knowledge of all interventional radiological procedures as
carried out within the Trust.
7. Setting up of sterile trolleys for radiological investigations. This will include scrubbing
up for some procedures, particularly the more complex interventional procedures.
8. Possess and increase knowledge of Anaesthetic, scrub and recovery roles as they
pertain to Radiology
9. Advise Radiographers and ATOs on aseptic technique and train ATOs in the setting
up of trolleys and care of the patient undergoing investigation.
10. Overall supervision of the ATOs.
11. Responsible for assessment of clinical competence of the ATOs (Guidelines for
Nursing Care in Interventional Radiology, RCR 2006).
12. Act as Link Nurse for Infection Control, advise all team members as to current policy.
Instruct all new members of staff, including medical, on hand washing and how to
access hospital infection control policies.
13. General Nursing duties regarding patient condition, TPR, intravenous infusions and
devices, drains and patient observations whilst in the Radiology department.
14. To be aware of types of radiological contrast agents and possible side effects.
15. To be able to recognise the onset of a medical emergency and be able to act
effectively to limit its progress.
16. Be responsible for ordering, storing, dispensing and recording of drugs including
controlled drugs, in accordance with Patient Group Directives, Trust and national
policy. Order by verbal, written and electronic means, record electronically or written
as appropriate. Be the controlled drugs keyholder for the department.
17. To enhance patient care by ensuring effective assessment of patients needs, this
includes making complex decisions on issues surrounding emergencies/problems
requiring immediate action.
18. Daily input and retrieve patient information appropriate to the department from the
trust information technology systems including EPR, PAS, RAD.
19. To participate in auditing, supporting and implementing necessary changes and
service improvements in the department. Audit is constant and ongoing.
20. Participate in research and development of unique clinical services and their
application to provide best practice and clinical excellence
21. Act as Link Nurse between the department and the wider hospital environment,
maintaining a learning environment and providing regular training as requested.
22. To empathise, persuade, negotiate with and provide reassurance to patients and
their relatives within the department, particularly those undergoing invasive
procedures, those with spinal cord injury, tumour patients and children. This will be
required daily.
23. To attend senior nurse meetings as department workload allows in order to increase
knowledge of hospital wide issues, feeding back information and instigating changes
as appropriate.
24. To communicate efficiently and effectively with the multidisciplinary team, other
departments within the Trust and outside agencies and actively participate on
decision making with some of these agencies.
25. Keep the Department Manager/ Clinical Director informed of changes in
circumstances that may affect the delivery of safe high quality patient care.
26. Keep abreast of current and future nursing and radiological trends.
27. Have knowledge of NHS and DOH policy and documentation which affects patient
care.
28. Have knowledge of Health and Safety policy and its application on a daily basis. Be
aware of IRMER as it applies to the nursing role in Radiology.
29. Promote an environment of openness and support for all staff, patients and visitors.
30. Perform any job related duties not specifically enumerated in this job description
which may be assigned by your Department Manager/Clinical Director but within
area of accountability.
