Job Description

Due to investment in our service and internal promotions, we are looking for an experienced, motivated, innovative, dynamic and friendly Unit Manager to join our expert team of clinical staff. You should be keen to be part of a forward looking team that is not afraid of change to progress and improve the family’s journey in neonates.

If you have significant experience post specialist neonatal course in an intensive care environment and are interested in this exciting opportunity to join our enthusiastic multidisciplinary team then we would love to hear from you
1. Accountable for own actions in accordance with Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times, including all aspects of child protection. Ensuring the safety of the baby at all times
2. Undertake highly specialised technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and defined expanded clinical roles.
3. Act as a resource of specialised knowledge and clinical expertise to ensure care delivery to Neonates is appropriate, optimum and evidence based. Demonstrates clinical expertise by role modelling family centred care to others
4. A high level of knowledge of UNICEF with the ability to support projects such as the UNICEF Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative and the BLISS audit
5. Highly developed communication skills enabling maintenance of high quality service and ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations
6. A knowledgeable manager, supporting staff, service and policy development within a defined area/specialty. A resource for staff, advising on national, local and trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice. Supports nursing staff to develop management and leadership skills through appropriate delegation and supervision

UHCW’S Level III Neonatal Unitprovides a wide range of services to sick newborn babies and forms part of the West Midlands Perinatal Network . The unit strives to provides family centered care to a range of babies from those born extremely prematurely around 22 weeks gestation to term babies who are sick at birth. We offer therapies such as Nitric Oxide, Cooling and ROP laser surgery using state of the art, new equipment.

UHCW neonatal unit looks after up to 8 Intensive care cots, 8 High dependency cots, 14 Special care cots and 6 Transitional care cots. We have a LMNS Outreach service and a wellbeing counselling service for families and staff. The unit has been accredited as the first level 3 Neonatal unit in the area as Baby Friendly by Unicef for the excellent practice in the support of infant feeding and parent-infant relationships. We have also been awarded our Bronze Bliss award. In our last CQC inspection (2018) UHCW was rated as good.

Over the years the unit has built an excellent reputation for high quality healthcare and outstanding career development. We support extended roles such as FiCare lead nurse, Transport Nurse, Neonatal Educational Practitioner, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Developmental Care Nurse & Infant Feeding Nurse roles. We also encourage development onto UHCWi sessions and management courses to help you progress your career. Our team of nurses help support parent resuscitation training, sibling support sessions as well as monthly parent coffee mornings and ‘Graduate’ parties. We are proud to have motivated teams delivering Quality improvement projects.

1. Responsible for Manger level reporting to trust management and Neonatal Network. To ensure communication from trust or network are disseminated to staff in a timely manner
2. Responsible for the development, education and training of staff and service in an identified area through appraisal and business planning cycles. Responsible for monitoring the development of a small team of nurses within the unit through appraisal and team meetings
3. Responsible for identifying and assessing complex clinical and non-clinical issues, implementing resolutions and monitoring/auditing outcomes. Will participate in research projects as appropriate
4. Organise and participate in the Stabilisation and transportation of ventilated Neonates
5. Responsible for interdepartmental/organisational activities including HR, resources, budget management; complaints; unit bleep holder responsibilities and patient flow
6. Demonstrate highly specialist technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and administration of invasive tests/procedures and defined expanded clinical roles
7. An effective change agent with the ability to initiate clinical audit and research to monitor clinical practice and processes and follow up using a benchmarking approach to ensure compliance with best practice clinical guideline
8. Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available
9. Regularly manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need
10. Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. imparting bad news or following an unexpected event
11. Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
12. Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all tim
13. Formulate protocols/policies and clinical guidelines in liaison with the Service Development Nurse
14. Support clinical nursing shifts in all areas on the Neonatal Unit at times of high acuity as required under the direction of the management team. Shifts may vary from normal working hours. Participate in the weekend on call rota
