Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 0.8 FTE Band 8c Consultant Clinical Psychologist position covering maternity leave for a period of 12 months in Clinical Haematology. The post comprises of 0.6 FTE into adult haematological malignancies and 0.2 WTE into lifespan thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura (TTP) service.

It is essential that the post-holder has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and to be HCPC registered by the time of commencing in post. The post holder will be employed by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and will usually be based at the City Hospital.


Main duties of the job

The haematological malignancies aspect will entail providing psychological therapy to both inpatient and outpatients for all blood cancers and stem cell transplants. The post will involve working as part of the multi-disciplinary team, providing input to group based interventions and delivering group supervision to non-psychology colleagues. There is also a requirement to provide supervision to psychology colleagues within the haematology department. The TTP service provides new patient screening, including neuropsychological, as well as providing psychological therapy for those living with the condition and support to the MDT.

The successful applicant will join the Department of Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. It is a supportive and well-respected department which incorporates specialisms in Medical Psychology and Neuropsychology. There are excellent links with the University of Nottingham and the Trent Clinical Psychology Doctorate Course.

Appropriate clinical supervision will be provided by clinical psychologists working in the adult medical psychology service.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Eligibility for Chartered Clinical Psychologist Status and registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council

Desirable criteria

  • Post-doctoral training/study in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice and supervision
  • Additional study/qualifications in illness or health psychology
  • Attendance on a regular basis at highly specialist CPD/training events e.g. those provided by the SCT Psychology Special Interest Group.
  • Specialist knowledge, experience and/or training relating to communicating with terminally ill patients.

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Extensive post qualification experience, including post qualification experience within Clinical Medical Psychology
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient and residential care settings including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care coordinator and also within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision to unqualified clinical psychologists and clinical psychologists in training.
  • Extensive post-qualification clinical experience of working with patients with general medical conditions and chronic illnesses
  • Experience of supervising and managing research and audit projects

  • Experience of neuropsychological assessment and interpretation.
  • Experience of professional management of qualified or pre-qualified clinical psychologists.

  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Ability to contain and work with organisational stress and ability to ‘hold’ the stress of others
  • Ability to identify provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours.

  • The ability to work effectively with clients from a diverse range of cultural/ethnic backgrounds, and to understand and respect the impact of difference and diversity upon clients’ lives and difficulties

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of highest level of analytical and judgemental skills.
  • A doctoral level of research knowledge. The ability to lead on both clinical and non-clinical research, applying a doctoral level of knowledge and skills in research designs, methods and analyses (including complex multivariate statistics) as practised in the field of clinical psychology
  • Ability to analyse highly complex psychological data in order to develop individual psychological formulations
  • Ability to identify, and employ, as appropriate, clinical governance mechanisms for the support and maintenance of clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.

  • Record of having published in either peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books
