Job Summary/ Support Provided
We are seeking a support worker to support a young lady with her complex care needs.
This is a full-time position (40-hour contract) but we will consider a job share. You will need to be fully flexible to cover shifts Monday through Sunday. You will need to be able to provide cover including weekends and overnight sleep ins.
You will be expected to drive L in her WAV to the family lodge in the Lake District and also drive the WAV while on holiday in Europe.
L likes to swim in the pool while on holiday abroad, you will be expected to safely get L into the water and get into the pool with L so you must be confident in the water.
Desirable skills - to care for gastrostomies/PEG, but training will be given to attain confidence and competence.

About the Client
L is a 22-year-old Female who requires a carer support worker to assist her on a 24-hour basis.
L requires full assistance with activities of daily living, including personal care, socialisation, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation.
L is non-verbal, therefore needs a person-centred support worker who is able to understand her eye pointing and body language, to be an advocate for her needs and wants.
L is a very bright, bubbly, happy young lady who lives at home with her parents and brother. Due to her happy disposition, she requires a support worker who is fun loving and will engage in activities that will stimulate L and make her laugh – show us your ‘jazz hands’
Likes and dislikes
L enjoys people, and being around happy people, regardless of activities. L enjoys a challenge and new ventures. L gets bored easily so requires activities in short sessions.
L is afraid of some animals, although she has undergone some de-sensitisation with farm animals, and furry animals, but is scared of cats! (still!)
Key Roles and Responsibilities of the Position
In general, this will involve taking an active role in working with L to attend appointments, encourage mild exercise, accompanying her with shopping, and liaising with appointed therapy professionals. The list below is not exhaustive but key areas are as follows:
- To assist L with accessing the community, food shopping, clothes shopping, and encouraging her to engage in suitable social and leisure activities.
- To be available to accompany L on family holidays both in the UK and abroad.
- To accompany L in any appointments during your shift
- To promote a healthy and well-balanced diet, in conjunction with her family
- To be skilled in the care of gastrostomies/PEG – training will be given.
- To promote L’s wellbeing and happiness.
- To support L with all aspects of her personal care including bathing, dressing and toileting.
- To maintain a safe environment for L in her home and in all community-based activities (subject to completion of risk assessment training).
- To follow support programmes agreed with L, family, case manager and therapists.
- To promote a clean environment
- To advise the family, or where appropriate the case manager of any concerns regarding L’s physical and psychological health.
- To use initiative when unforeseen events occur, and the family / case manager are not directly available to provide guidance.
- To work as an individual responsible to the case manager and to ensure good communication, flexibility, and a consistent approach to care.
- To attend meetings and training sessions as requested.
- To make a daily report following each duty regarding L’s welfare.
- To liaise with the case manager for annual leave requests and alert the family and case manager of sickness that will prevent them working, in order that cover can be organised.
- To report to the case manager regarding general progress and any incidents that give rise for concern.
- To respect the privacy of L. All matters relating to L’s situation and family are to be treated as confidential and are not to be disclosed to a third party.
Personal Specification
DESIRABLE
NVQ in Health and Social Care
Experience supporting therapy programmes e.g. Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapist and Physiotherapist
Previous experience of working with clients in their own homes and lone working
Experience of providing care services to physically disabled individuals
Previous experience and confidence with care of gastrostomies/PEG
Understanding of taking a reablement approach to promote independence
Knowledge of care of gastrostomies/PEG
Skilled in the care of gastrostomies/PEG
ESSENTIAL
Previous experience of caring for others
Awareness of the principles of confidentiality
Knowledge of safeguarding protocol and procedures
In possession of a full UK driving licence and have been driving for at least 12 months
Ability to drive confidently and safely both in the local area and also long distance
Ability to swim and confident in the water
Good oral communication skills, fluency in English language
Able to communicate in writing, maintaining accurate records
Have good interpersonal skills
Ability to motivate and encourage others
Skills in listening and demonstrating empathy in a non-judgemental manner
Flexible approach to working hours, shift patterns and support
Able to build an open and trusting relationship with others
Polite and courteous in manner

Other Benefits
- 5.6 weeks paid annual leave pro rata. The leave year runs from April to March. (You may be instructed to take a period of your annual leave entitlement when the client is on holiday, please refer to your Contract of Employment.)
- 1.5x pay rate if required to work Bank Holidays.
- Pay to attend supervision/team meetings.
- Pay and expenses when required to attend training courses as requested by employer.
Probation
There will be a six-month probationary period
Training
A full induction programme plus regular support, supervision and ongoing training will be provided.
Working Environment
The client lives in her own home which has been designed/adapted to meet her needs.
The home is a strictly no smoking environment and under no circumstances will staff be permitted to smoke at any time during the working day. Staff will also need to ensure that they arrive on shift free from the odour of smoke.

All matters relating to the client’s condition are to be treated as confidential and are not to be disclosed to a third party. As this employment is based in the private home, it is inevitable that on occasion the carers will become privy to certain matters relating to the personal life and business affairs of the client. These too should be treated with the utmost confidentiality and, wherever possible, all support staff should avoid coming into contact with personal belongings and correspondence.
