Collection and Delivery Driver
The vision of the Metropolitan Police Service is to make London safe for everyone. We are radically changing to deliver high-quality policing services in a more efficient and cost-effective way, in line with the Mayor of London’s Police and Crime Plan. Our operational policing fleet comprises of over 5000 vehicles, 1000 pedal cycles and 25 marine vessels. Vehicles are a workplace for our officers and staff, carrying sophisticated equipment for operational policing, or providing a safe environment for the transport of the public and prisoners. By their very nature, vehicles are often used in the most arduous and challenging conditions.
About Fleet Services
MO11 Fleet Services form part of the ‘Met Operations’ business group, providing pan-London support to support policing across the Capital. Fleet Services are responsible for all aspects of fleet lifecycle management to the Metropolitan Police Service, including vehicle maintenance. Fleet Services are also responsible for the service, maintenance and repair of police vehicles and vessels that are ‘retained’ by the Metropolitan Police Service; specifically, those assets where service, maintenance and repair activities are completed at our purpose-built workshops by our in-house team of dedicated technicians and support staff.
The main duties of this role
The Collection and Delivery Team play an important role moving vehicles from police stations across London into our vehicle workshop. As a Collection and Delivery Driver, the role holder will report into the Collection and Delivery Team Manager (Band D) and will be responsible for safely collecting and delivering both marked and unmarked police vehicles across London. The Collection and Delivery team were established to enable one core policing benefit; by taking care of transporting their vehicles to the workshops, frontline police officers can remain engaged on frontline policing duties. The Collection and Delivery Driver will start and end their duties at the same location and will be required to drive vehicles to and from our repair locations and complete other ad-hoc driving tasks. The role holder should be confident driving in London, navigating with a satellite navigation system. Whilst some movements are ‘two-way’ movements, the role holder will be required to use public transport to move between sites to pick up vehicles, so they should be comfortable using public transport. The role holder’s diary will be planned for them; however, they would be required to plan the most effective travel on public transport between collections. As many of the vehicles we manage are advanced high-specification vehicles, we’re looking for somebody who is a safe and confident driver, who has great attention-to-detail, and who has excellent customer service skills when communicating with our customers. A background within policing would be advantageous however is not essential. You’ll be supported by a team of Collection and Delivery Drivers so whilst you’ll often work on your own, you can rely on the support of your peers when required.
This role will involve a significant amount of time (90% +) working outdoors (e.g. driving, handing over cars, checking cars etc.) and will be based out of our purpose-built vehicle workshop in Belvedere, but operating across London. The role holder will:
-
Deliver an efficient end-to-end collection and delivery service for a varied fleet of specialist vehicles within the MPS
-
Work as part of a driving team to meet all departmental performance KPIs
-
Support frontline operational policing with a safe, well maintained and available fleet at the lowest possible cost, which meets the operational needs of the MPS and externally set standards
-
Liaise directly with operational police officer customers by email and telephone to facilitate the collection or return of their police vehicles
-
Reconcile their public transport expenditure (this role will provide a fully expensed travel card for work journeys on public transport)
-
Ensuring that all vehicle movements are completed consistently, legally and professionally
-
Maintain a high level of driver competence and operational excellence when performing their duties and manage quality of service issues
