JOB DESCRIPTION: Head Grounds Person (with accommodation)
Location: Sherborne School
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Core working hours are generally 8.00am – 4.30pm working five days out of seven (less 30 minutes unpaid lunch break each day; however regular flexibility is required to support sports fixtures outside of these times and major School events such as the Commemoration weekend.
Salary: £31,694.09 per annum paid monthly in arrears direct into a nominated bank account.
Accommodation: 3 double bed cottage which backs onto the playing fields. Fitted kitchen, gas central heating, double glazed.
Holiday: 25 days per annum, plus Public Holidays. You will be required to work on any Bank Holidays during term time when the School is working, for which you will be given a day off in lieu. Attendance will be required at annual School Commemoration events.
Principal Role
The overall objective is to ensure that all open space sports facilities and their elements of Sherborne Group Estate are at all times maintained to a very high standard and in a clean, tidy, well presented and safe condition commensurate with the status of the School, to ensure the proper functioning of the School and all its activities whilst representing and contributing to fulfilling its importance to the town of Sherborne.
The Head Grounds Person fulfils a key role in the marketing of the School and its academic and recreational life. The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for the upkeep of the sports pitches and associated sports grounds.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
1.To provide and maintain the Group’s playing fields and the provision of pitches and courts to a high standard. Working closely with Games Department and Masters in Charge of the respective sports to ensure the Group’s busy fixture list runs smoothly.
2.Advising and consulting Masters in Charge of Games on the allocation and state of the pitches and courts and their playability or otherwise. This includes co-ordination of events using the fields, the requirements of the Director of Sports and other field users, and outside commercial usage of the pitches.
3.The upkeep of all grass areas, hedges and trees as appropriate to ensure a high standard of visual impact.
4.Cost-effective delivery of grounds-related services throughout the school taking into consideration time and financial pressures in consultation with the Operations Bursar.
5.The maintenance of all machinery and the provision of a programme for servicing and renewal, as appropriate. Ensuring the Department meets compliance requirements.
6. The negotiation of contracts for products or servicing used in grounds maintenance.
7. Lead, motivate and develop the Grounds team to fulfil the planned work schedules and objectives of the Department.
8. To consider the welfare of the Grounds staff, hold regular meetings to ensure the team is up-to-date with developments within the department and whole School.
9. Attend meetings with key stakeholders and the Estates Department on a regular basis to encourage school wide communication.
10. Sustainable waste management to ensure the site is presented in the best possible condition including cleanliness and tidiness.
11. In consultation with the Operations Bursar, the upkeep and maintenance of fields’ buildings and plant.
12. Ensure you and your team promote the wellbeing and safeguarding of our pupils, staff and visitors.
13. Ensure the grounds team works in a safe, secure, and compliant environment whilst fulfilling health and safety obligations, including appropriate use of PPE.
14. Understand the legislation relating to grounds-related chemicals and dangerous substances and actively promote safe working practices.
15. Health and Safety, in accordance with the School Health and Safety Policy Document, ensure you and your team complies with all relevant national and local regulations including First Aid, COSHH and environment management. Written risk assessments and safe operating procedures should be in place where appropriate for the handling and storage of liquids and materials and for the use of grounds machinery.
16. Security of the field’s area and buildings
17. Work collaboratively with the rest of the Estates and Gardens Team to ensure that the Estate is always presented to a very high standard.
18. Undertake any other duties required by the Operations Bursar or the Head of Estates and Facilities Management within the scope of the post.
