We are seeking a Technical Fisheries Officer to join the busy Fisheries and Enforcement Team in the East Midlands area. The role provides technical support to deliver fishery objectives and support sustainable fishery management. The role includes providing technical advice on a range of internal and external projects, programmes, consents and permits. The role supports area wide fisheries incident management, and the candidate will be expected to play a key role with this work. Out of hours working is a requirement. The role will operate in a catchment area where engagement with a range of statutory and non-statutory partners, including rod licence paying customers, is critical to reputational management and outcome delivery.

The East Midlands fisheries and enforcement team is based at our Trentside office in Nottingham and covers the River Trent catchment from the Derbyshire Derwent to the Humber Estuary. The team is involved in a range of work including incident response, fisheries management, inputting into major capital schemes, partnership working, river habitat enhancements, and fisheries enforcement.

Essential:

• Degree in relevant subject or equivalent professional experience
• Good understanding of fisheries ecology and practical fisheries management
• Good general fish identification
• Ability to analyse and interpret data
• Self-motivated, acting independently with a pro-active approach
• Strong influencing skills with experience of engaging key stakeholders
• Confident communicator
• Excellent time management skills to manage an unpredictable workload and balance conflicting needs and priorities
• Full driving licence

Advantageous:

• An understanding of fisheries legislation and law
• Knowledge of still water and river conservation and legislation relating to designated sites
• Understanding river processes and hydrology
• Experience of effective partnership working
• Working knowledge of fish passage and hydropower
• Knowledge of water industry process
• Knowledge of Flood Risk Activity Permitting process
• Electric fishing experience
• 4x4 and trailer towing competencies
