Job Description

ASR Group is the world’s largest refiner and marketer of cane sugar, with an annual production capacity of more than 6 million tons of sugar. The company produces a full line of grocery, industrial, food service and specialty sweetener products. Across North America, ASR Group owns and operates six sugar refineries, located in Louisiana, New York, California, Maryland, Canada and Mexico. We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Shift Manager to join our team at the Thames Refinery. As the Shift Manager, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the refinery process, ensuring that production targets are met while maintaining high-quality standards and minimizing costs. This is a 24/7 role that requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and a commitment to safety and environmental regulations.


We are looking for a self-starter who can add value to this role and our people. An effective problem solver who can think on their feet to resolve plant issues. Working cross functionally with our teams to collaborate on projects with a focus on continuous improvement, allowing you to share and deliver your own ideas to improve our practices and processes.


This role will be based at our Thames Refinery in East London.


Hours of work – 12hrs shifts – days and nights with planned annual leave (rota)


What will you be doing

  • Ensure the process is operated consistently to meet daily/weekly production plans at the lowest achievable refining cost, striving for best practice.
  • Ensure all operating areas* of the business are integrated on a 24/7 basis so that refinery performance is optimised and customer expectations met.
  • Manage reactive maintenance to ensure minimum cost and downtime.
  • In the event of an incident, act as the single point for coordination and control consistent with the company’s Crisis Management procedures.
  • Manage the Refining Operators on Crew to best effect to ensure the above targets are met.
  • Guide and mentor, the shift team with respect to problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Assist the Area Technical Managers in the Optimisation of their plant areas by involving the Crew teams where appropriate.


What are we looking for

  • Proven experience in manufacturing operations or a similar process management role Experience of working in a Continuous Improvement environment and working on initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of safety, hygiene, and environmental regulations.
  • Excellent understanding of manufacturing processes and best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team to achieve production targets.
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to guide and mentor others.
  • Project management experience and familiarity with capital expenditure initiatives.
  • Degree qualified preferred or qualified by experience – Chemical/heavy engineering/FMCG or Food & Beverage
