Job overview

This is an opportunity for two suitably qualified physiotherapists (working 18.75 hours each) to work in the emergency department of NUH, based on the QMC Campus.

You will see patients with mainly musculoskeletal problems, independently of medical staff.

You will undertake activities including expert assessment, requesting and interpreting investigations, managing wounds, soft tissue injuries and fractures, providing advice and treatment, freeing doctors to manage more complex conditions and
improve patient flow.

Main duties of the job

To manage and undertake physiotherapy interventions within the Emergency department.

To provide a high quality, effective physiotherapy service within the Emergency Department and professional leadership to more junior staff.

To provide a specialist physiotherapy assessment of patients presenting with a diverse clinical presentation and pathology, to determine a clinical diagnosis and to provide treatment interventions via effective treatment plans.

The Physiotherapy service is part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Services pathway, which is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH. We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 600 staff, who works together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to.

Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent core physiotherapy skills across a range of musculoskeletal areas. You will have a willingness to learn and develop further, both clinically and professionally.

You will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team who will give support and training for you to develop in this role to reach your full potential. You will demonstrate an ability to work autonomously and provide support to less experienced members of the team.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work flexibly to support the needs of the service.

Essential criteria

  • BSc Hons (or equivalent) Physiotherapy
  • Recognised post-graduate training relevant to specialty preferably including MSc or completed modules

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Wide ranging experience working within MSK Physiotherapy
  • Knowledge of current best practice within a clinical specialty
  • Able to evaluate current research and make recommendations for change in practice and implement these change

Communication & Relationship Skills

Essential criteria

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills

Analytical & Judgement SKills

Essential criteria

  • Able to reflect and critically appraise own performance and the performance of other staff
  • Risk assessment skills for the safe management and discharge of very complex patients
  • Able to make decisions about the treatment needs of highly complex patients
  • Able to make judgements about the prioritising of caseloads when demand exceeds capacity and to re-allocate staffing resources
  • Able to make decisions about the allocation of a caseload to a team of staff

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
